Art by the Seaside
Michaelmas term's course syllabus and invitation to the group!
Michaelmas Term Art course
Having fun and learning new skills and making mistakes that enable us to improve is the key to this course. As I can attest, being a beginner last term! There was no shortage of missteps in my exercises. (Am I better? YES. Am I good? NO. Do I want to continue to Learn laugh & have fun YES)
Coming later this month is the return of our fabulously talented tutor, Nawal Gebreel.
For experienced artists and those that began last term, this is a continuation with a structured syllabus to continue learning how to: use different techniques e.g. Cling Film, tissue paper; use Tone, Saturation, Hue. Colour mixing and application and many, many more.
For members who are keen to try their hand at doing some art. Beginners are welcome and can be accommodated during the sessions! You’ll see and talk to last terms beginners advancing! Nawal will continue to give her excellent demonstrations and talk through queries and questions as artists practice their art.

Your Tutor is Nawal Gebreel
Developing Artists, see Michaelmas term's syllabus above.
Beginners: Students will learn the fundamental of colour theory, colour mixing and techniques so
they will be able to apply them on their work.
They will learn about tone to create depth in their work; I will demonstrate how to create
translucent washes and texture.
After the introduction to watercolour, students will be asked to bring their own photo,
to use as reference for their painting.
At the end of the term everyone will be able to produce several complete paintings.
Nawal is an experienced teacher, having been a lecturer at Southport and Skelmersdale colleges and runs workshops and lesson for adults, children, those with “special needs” in museums, galleries and other private and public institutions.
Nawal runs regular classes in watercolours, mixed media art, textiles, machine embroidery, for all abilities and experience (from complete beginners - to experienced)
If you would like coffee or tea there is an honesty box at the sailing club - please bring £1.50 for your drink.
The class is £15 and this can only be paid in cash or by cheque payable to Southport u3a - there is no card machine. Thank you.

Summer 2026 Art By the Lake
Art by the lake
The inaugural splash for the Beginners Art's - School's Out summer break newsletter.
We've had such fun with Nawal, her encouragement and demonstration in good humour has resulted in us all having fun and creating our own inimitable watercolour styles.
We have one breakaway colleague doing a spectacular work in acrylics.
So Nawal has packed her bags for the summer holiday, to return in September.
What to do with our new found hobby?
Well we've set up a WhatsApp group, to enable colleagues to set up rendezvous to meet, chat, laugh and paint/sketch, maybe in a park or in town.
Maybe we'll feel brave and show our future works, maybe! Works from the course and some of our group who are NOT beginners is accompanying this article.
Since school starts again in September, it's expected that, there will only be two letters from this group! However maybe as we go through the year, a new group of beginners will start, possibly accompanied by some more experienced artists and our band of no-longer beginners will progress.....
If you're interested in joining our group, beginner or not, just go to the Beginners Art group page and email the leaders. (For the non beginners there are always tips and recommendations for advancement, so I'm told by a non beginner in our midst!)
Thank you for your pictures and glassworks:
