On Wednesday, 17 September 2025, we have arranged a group visit to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Heritage Centre at Aintree, Liverpool.

Here we will learn about the history of fire fighting in Merseyside. It was Liverpool that put the world’s first steam fire engine in service (decades before other cities!). The Heritage Centre has memorabilia, vintage fire engines and equipment.

We will be travelling by train from Southport at approximately 10:00 am (train times to be confirmed nearer to the date of the event).

We will travel via Sandhills station, where the group will alight and transfer over to the Ormskirk train. On leaving this train at Aintree, there is an approximately 10-15 minute walk to the Heritage centre.

COST: £10 pp which includes a donation to the Heritage Centre and tea/coffee, a sandwich and a pastry  for lunch after your tour.

TO BOOK: CLICK HERE  (or if you prefer, navigate independently to the Southport U3A Website, log into the membership zone and on the  Local History Group 1 webpage, and click on the link under Events for  the 'Visit to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Heritage Centre at Aintree'. (When booking  please advise  if you have any special dietary requirements,  to pass on to the Heritage Centre cafe).

Deadline for all payments is no later than 7 August 2025 (date of the U3A monthly meeting at Christchurch)
